A Study on the Use of Radium and Radium Substitutes in Brachytherapy

A continuation was made of the work which proposed to compare radium, 137Cs and 60Co brachytherapy sources. The present endeavor is restricted to the comparison of radium and 137Cs for use in implant needles and utero-cervical applicators. A study was done to compare the relative safety of radium salt with that of radium incorporated in ceramic microspheres. Tests were made to determine the similarity of sources between one manufacturer and another, and also to test the uniformity of sources from one manufacturer. Isodose contours about radium and 137Cs Indian club and dumbbell needles were established. This was also done for utero-cervical applications, using each nuclide. A method is proposed for coding of brachytherapy sources. (Author)
