Stress-Strain Model for Soils over a Wide Stress Range

The stress-strain behavior of soils over a wide range of stress levels has been studied, and an elasto-plastic stress-strain model has been proposed. The model takes into account characteristics of soil behavior such as dilatancy, plastic volumetric strain due to hydrostatic pressures, the effect of intermediate principal and mean normal stresses on deformation and strength properties, as well as work-softening behavior after the peak strength. A finite element program called AXIEP was written using the proposed model, and the program has been used to analyze triaxial tests on sands for which data has been published. These tests have been carried out for a wide range of stress levels and various stress paths, and it is demonstrated that the proposed stress-strain model can reproduce the behavior of sands fairly well for all the stress paths and stress levels examined.
