Experience in a large commercial vehicle plant using advanced automation techniques is discussed. Maintenance services requirements can be met satisfactorily, provided the production and maintenance personnel involved are properly trained. The use of computer systems with efficient fault diagnosis is a prerequisite to ensure a high level of machine availability, particularly in complex manufacturing systems equipped with a large number of actuating elements. The exploitation of computer intelligence to support maintenance is increasingly important.
