The simultaneous three dimensional method with the purpose of retrieving, simultaneously, vertical temperature and moisture profiles from meteorological satellite radiances was developed. This regularization method was implemented on the University of Wisconsin McIDAS System by means of VAS 3-D algorithms designed in the slow and fast modes for applications with VAS on board GOES satellites. Tests were performed in continental middle latitudes, with cloudy and clear skies, as well as in a tropical humid region (Amazon). The results showed the 3-D approach viability to the VAS sounding problem. It was found that: (1) stable solutions were obtained with the experimentally chosen regularization parameter; and (2) the retrievals quality was comparable with that obtained by the CIMSS operational VAS algorithm in several instances, especially in the presence of cloudiness. It was also verified that the quality of the solutions is influenced by several factors such as the algorithm mode and the meteorological conditions. Numerical experiments with the instability indexes and atmospheric precipitable water calculated from radiances obtained by GOES-6 during the GTE/ABLE 1985, showed the VAS importance for the Amazon region.
