摘要

This is the final report of this investigation. It summarizes two years of experimental work performed under Contract Nos. NAS 8-21207 and NAS 8-30519. The overall purpose of this work was to study the interactions between liquid dinitrogen tetroxide (N2O4) and 6A1 4V titanium alloy that lead to stress corrosion cracking (SCC). The study was almost exclusively focused on establishing the relationships between the chemical composition of N2O4 systems and SCC behavior. The specific objectives of the program were:n(1) To develop a standard SCC test capable of evaluating the SCC behavior of various types of N2O4.n(2) To develop qualitative and quantitative methods of analysis capable of determining significant compositional differences in various types of N2O4.n(3) To identify that constituent or component of N2O4 that induces or enhances SCC in 6A1 4V Ti alloy.n(4) To attempt to establish the possible presence of SCC inhibitors in certain types of N2O4 and to determine the concentration levels that are critical to their inhibitory action.
