Automatic Thermal Impedance Scanning (ATIS) System for NDE of Coatings on Turbine Engine Parts

An Automatic Thermal Impedance Scanning (ATIS) system for nondestructively testing thermal spray coating bonds in turbine engine parts is being developed. Precision manipulators (robots) are used to scan the parts as well as load them into the system under computer control. Signals from the scans are automatically computer interpreted to give probable locations of bond defects. The system was designed for practical day-to-day use in a production facility.
