Adaptive Intelligent Agents: Human-Computer Collaboration in Command and Control Application Environments

In the past decade, intelligent agents have proven to be of interest in many important application areas, such as electronic commerce on the Internet, the control of space probes on missions to the outer planets, the design of user interfaces, and military mission planning and execution operations involving decision making and coordination functions, collectively known as command and control (C2). C2 application environments are dynamic and nondeterministic; thus, there are unique challenges involved in incorporating intelligent-agent technology within them. Decision makers are required to assess and solve a variety of problems as quickly as possible, at times without adequate resources. The incorporation of agent technology into C2 applications offers great benefit in the form of human-computer collaboration and provides decision makers with assistance in carrying out their mission-related activities. This paper presents some suggestions on the types of tasks best suited to agents used in C2 application environments and discusses the challenges involved in using agent technology within C2 application environments.
