We were recently reminded that a long time standards professional, Oliver Smoot, was noted for his contribution to the standards community—the unit of measure called the Smoot. Ollie worked for the Information Technology Industry Council (ITIC) and oversaw their standards program, but is best known for being the Chairman of the Board of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and, later, the President of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). To learn more, there is a nice interview on NPR station WBUR online at http://radioboston.wbur. org/2016/05/06/ollie-smoot-the-officialunit-of-measure-for-the-harvard-bridge.
