"Standards research" began to emerge as a distinct field of academic study in the late 1990s. Initially prompted by a couple of books, government studies, and university courses, this fledgling field has, over less than a decade, grown a set of periodic conferences, academic journals, and the beginnings of a literature tradition of its own. One individual responsible for this development is Dr. Kai Jakobs of the University of Aachen, both a standards practitioner and an academic researcher. Dr. Jakobs initiated the biennial SIIT conference (Standardization and Innovation in Information Technology) in 1999. He later founded the International Journal of IT Standards and Standardization Research, and most recently, a book series published by Idea Group. The latest contribution to this series is this edited Volume 1, a diverse yet complementary collection of papers, many of them by some of the key contributors to this new growing body of knowledge.
