Its raining, its pouring and the old man is snoring - However, Bureau of Indian Standards is wide-awake revising various standards related to rain water. For any project concerned with irrigation, hydro-power, flood control and drainage, it is essential to have complete information on aerial and time distribution of rainfall over the concerned area or catchment. Data on other meteorological elements, such as wind, temperature, dew point, etc, are also useful in planning and execution of multipurpose river valley projects. IS 5542 'Guide for storm analysis' provides guidelines for estimation, distribution and analysis of storm precipitation. This analysis is useful for flood studies, drainage design, spillway design, bridge waterways, etc. The simplest method of measuring precipitation is by using gauges and raingauges are of two types, namely (a) non-recording, and (b) recording. The non-recording type measures only the accumulated rain which has fallen in a course of time, generally 24 hours while the recording type indicates the duration, amount and intensity of rain whenever it occurs. However, when a recording type is desired at a particular place it is imperative that non-recording type is also installed alongside for comparison. IS 8389 'Installation and use of raingauges, recording - Code of practice' is confined to the recording type of rain gauges.
