Combining ability lot yield and its components was analysed in a 10 X 10 diallel crosses (excluding reciprocals), involving 5 indigenous cultivars and 5 high yielding varieties of rice. The GCA and SCA were significant for all the characters, indicating the importance of both additive and non-additive genetic components. The parents. Mahsuri for yield, number of grains panicle~(-1) and number of effective tillers plant~(-1) ; IR 50 for yield, number of effective tillers, reduced plant height and earliness; Dhaneswar for grain yield (F_2), 100-grain weight, number of grains panicle~(-1) (F_2), length of panicle and earliness and Pawanpeer for grain yield, 100-grain weight, number of effective tillers plant~(-1) , reduced plant height and earliness; were good general combiners. Among the crosses, Kanakjeera X IR 50, Mahsuri X Kanakjeera, IR 50 X Pawanpeer and Admchini X RP 1570-6-5-1-1 were good specific combiners for grain yield plant~(-1).
