Avian influenza has brought on the destruction of 4 million birds in the Shenandoah Valley. The hillside parking lots, sloped patches of black-top, are packed with automobiles parked car door to car door. At times the scene is the same at nearly allthe motels for a 100-mile stretch along the blue artery on the map known as I-81 running up and down Viorginia's Shenandoah Valley, Even late at night there are sometimes unexpected rushes with lines backed up at motel counters. Could it be the races intown? A football game at the local university? "No," answers the clerk behind the counter at the local Days Inn without hesitation. "We have avian influenza here."
