Global tea prices fell slightly in December, as a modest rise in Mombasa was offset by lower prices in Colombo and Calcutta. The Three Auction Average fell to US2.99dollar per kg - down 5 cents from November but more than a dollar higher than the samemonth last year. At the Colombo auction, prices in December averaged US3.27dollar per kg -down 8 cents from the previous month but more than 70% higher than the same month last year. At the Calcutta auction, average prices fell back to US2.73 dollar per kg - down by 18 cents from the previous month but in line with the usual seasonal decline in quality. At Mombasa, prices rose to a record US2.98dollar per kg - surpassing the previous record set in September of this year. However, these gains were erased in early January as it became clear that Kenyan tea production is recovering beyond expectations.
