Auction quotations declined in India, Sri Lanka and Kenya last month on the back of a combination of high output, low exports and poor quality, which led to a 6.7% drop of the three-auction average to 1.613 dollar per kg. Therefore, the indicator quoted below the level of the same year-ago month for the first time since September 2003. In May 2004, the indicator had been quoted at 1.669 dollar. In Colombo, the auction average fell to 1.761 dollar per kg from 1.885 dollar last month, but still above the 1.716 dollar twelve months ago. In Calcutta, the monthly average was 1.669 dollar per kg, down from 1.833 dollar the previous month and compared with 1.768 dollar in May 2004. The Mombasa auction average continued to decrease and reached only 1.409 dollar per kg, down from 1.466 dollar the previous month and 1.509 dollar in May 2004. This was the lowest level since May 2002 when the monthly average was 1.39 dollar.
