The three-auction average rose considerably last month on a seasonal sharp rise in Calcutta amid slightly lower auction realisations in Colombo and Mombasa. It averaged 1.729 dollar last month, up from 1.588 dollar in March, but also 5.5 cents higherthan the 1.674 dollar seen in April 2004. In Calcutta, the monthly average rose to 1.833 dollar per kg from 1.338 dollar the previous month due to the onset of auctions of the freshly harvested 2005 "first flush" teas. Last year, the April average was only 1.759 dollar per kg. In Colombo, the auction average fell to 1.885 dollar per kg from 1.94 dollar in March. However, prices are still considerably higher than the 1.723 dollar twelve months ago. The Mombasa auction average continued to decrease and reached just 1.468 dollar last month, down from 1.488 dollar in March and 1.54 dollar in April 2004.
