Revisiting capacity: a holistic approach to empowering parents. Commentary on 'Parents' perspectives of an Australian augmentative and alternative communication service: 'I clapped for my child'' (Johnson, van Nierop, lacono, 2021)
Decades of research have now amassed regarding parents' experiences of augmentative and alternative communication service delivery and the data consistently expose a critical tension: while families appreciate quality services and resources, they are under immense pressure to accommodate these on a daily basis (e.g., Altheide 8c Livermore, 1987; Anderson et al., 2014, 2015; Goldbart Marshall, 2004; Moorcroft et al., 2020). In this commentary, I re-examine the core early intervention concepts of parental capacity and capacity building, in light of what parents continue to tell us about their experiences. Opportunities for interventionists and policymakers to enhance family outcomes through more holistic capacity building are also addressed.
