News of virtually unchanged industrial output and weaker projections of manufacturing output into the year seem to have justified the closure proposals of Corus, but within days of their publication the company was providing ammunition for its critics. The company's Dutch works (at Ujmuiden) - already acknowledged to achieve labour productivity rates only 80-85 percent of those at Llanwern - was calling on the Welsh works to supply 92,000 tonnes of slab to make good production losses due to problems with one of its blast furnaces.
