Synthesis of Aryl Ethers from Benzoates through Carboxylate-Directed C—H-Activating Alkoxylation with Concomitant Protodecarboxylation

The aryl ether functionality is a common motif in many classes of biologically active compounds and functional materials. Traditional methods to attach ether groups to aromatic rings require either activated substrates (S_NAr) or harsh reaction conditions (Ullmann-type condensation), and are therefore not ideal for the late-stage functionalization of complex molecules.
