The unusual bis(amino acid)lanthionine 1 is the key component of many natural products, including the so-called lanti-biotics, a family of multiple thioether-bridged antimicrobial peptides produced by bacteria.Lantibiotics have found broad application as food preservatives (for example, nisin) and are considered to be a promising class of antibiotic agents. In nature, the monosulfide linkage of lanthionines is formed post-translationalfy and derived from the cyclase-mediated Michael addition of a cysteine (Cys) to a dehydroa-lanine (Dha) residue within the same peptide sequence.
