Alberta's resource companies buy over 40% of the annual production of heavy-duty diesel pickups in Canada. Likely, that fact alone was why GM chose the village of Beiseker, AB, to launch their new diesel powertrain combination. Still, it was an introduction with one obvious problem - this powertrain has no new truck to wrap around it. So, I wondered, how did they expect to show it off? Well, rather than wait as much as a year for the next generation Sierra, they opted to put the new 6.6L Duramax diesel and six-speed Allison transmission into their '06 truck, and demonstrate it by drag racing it at a local airstrip against the current diesel offerings from Ford and Dodge.
