Trifluoromethane (CHF3, fluoroform, HFC-23) is a gas (b.p. = -82°C) that is formed as a side product (> 20000 t/a) in Teflon manufacturing. Being neither toxic nor ozone-depleting, fluoroform must nonetheless be destroyed because of its high global-warming potential (> 10~4 that of CO2) and atmospheric lifetime of more than 250 years. Incineration of CHF3, a flame retardant, is, however, a costly and environmentally unfriendly process.
