We present isolable examples of formal zinc hydride cations supported by N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) donors, and investigate the dual electrophilic and nucleophilic (hydri-dic) character of the encapsulated ZnH~+ units by computational methods and preliminary hydrosilylation catalysis.
