Complexation of N,N'-Bis(saIicylidene)-ethylenediiminatocobalt(III)~+ by Anilines in Dimethylformamide

N,N''-Bis(salicyIidene)ethylenediiminatocobalt(ll), (Co~(II)(salen) 1, binds oxygen reversibly and is employed as an oxygenation catalyst for the transfer of one or two O atoms to organic substrates. It is assumed that a hypothetical ternary complex of 1, O_2, and a substrate molecule is formed. In investigations of the catalyst in solvent mixtures we have shown that axial ligands in neutral Co" as well as in Co~(III) complexes (having a single positive charge) and with 2 as the central unit can be exchanged in wo steps.
