Following the discovery of selenoenzymes, selenium-containing compounds have been studied extensively because of their interesting reactivity profile and potential pharmaceutical significance. For example, there has been considerable interest in organoselenium compounds as reagents or intermediates in synthetic chemistry, as heavy-atom versions of oligonucleotides and proteins for crystallographic study,as human metabolites, as cancer-preventative agents, and as substrates for biomimetic studies.
