Vision and Mind: Selected Readings in the Philosophy of Perception

The writings of both visual scientists and philosophers are represented in this volume, which is focused upon the following issue: Is vision, as David Marr claims, "the process of discovering from images what is present in the world, and where it is"? If so, we must explain how the brain constructs complex representations of the world on the basis of impoverished retinal stimuli. Or is the function of vision to keep the perceiver in touch with the environment and guide action rather than to produce inner experiences and representations, as J. J. Gibson argues?
