Hydrogenation is one of the most important chemical transformations for a wide range of materials, and a variety of metal hydrides have been used in catalytic hydrogenation reactions with hydrogen gas. As an alternative, electro-catalytic reduction is a clean process and has advantages in terms of cost, regulation of reactivity of catalysts by choosing applied potentials, and handling compared with the use of stoichiometric amounts of common reducing agents, such as LiAlH4.
