Oligomeric phosphazenes with repeating units -NPX2-_n have found a wide range of applications in medicine, conducting polymers, elastomers, membranes, lubricants, additives etc. Their corresponding monomers, X2PN (nitridophosphines, phosphinonitriles), first generated as intermediates about 25 years ago by photolysis of phosphinyl azides, X2PN3 Eq. (1). have emerged as building blocks in synthetic organophosphorus chemistry.
