Kinases catalyze protein phosphorylation to regulate signal transduction in a cell. Thus, the identification of substrates of a particular kinase is a fundamental step toward understanding the signaling cascades in normal and disease states. With over 500 known kinases and a paucity of tools available, the identification of genuine kinase substrates has been difficult. New approaches to detect substrates are needed to fully characterize cell-signaling networks.
