New fungicides - new strategies?

Various fungicidal treatments were compared, with the application of fungicides based either on economic thresholds or the growth stage of the crop. Varieties of winter wheat with different disease susceptibilities were selected for the experimentswhich were conducted at 6 to 8 locations in Germany for a period of five years from 1992. Comparing the 2 strategies, it was shown that results were mainly determined by the intensity of the growth stage-based application. The economic threshold-based applications were not superior to the stage-based broad spectrum fungicides Opus Top [epoxiconazole + fenpropimorph] and Juwel [kresoxim-methyl + epoxiconazole]. Reasons and possible consequences for the control of diseases in winter wheat are discussed.
