Beef and veal production in selected countries has fallen by about one per cent in 2008 and any recovery in 2009 is forecast to be small. Of the major producing countries only the United States and China are expected to record an increase in 2008. Therise in 2008 is due to an increase in cow beef production but this is forecast to decline in 2009. US prime beef production is declining because of the lack of profitability of feedlots. However, as in other parts of the world US feed prices have fallen sharply this autumn.
