United States production in 2005 was largely unchanged but growth in the beef herd points to an increase in production in 2006. Elsewhere, production in Canada, Russia and Japan appear to be on a downward trend, although in the case of Canada the decline is due to the fact that in mid-2005 it re-started exports of live cattle to United States. Production in the EU was lower last year and, despite the small rise predicted for 2006 partly because cattle over thirty months of age are once again allowedinto the food chain in the United Kingdom, supplies will remain tight.
