A continued strong feature of the world beef market is the effect that disease outbreaks can have on trade patterns. The incidence of BSE in the United States has had a devastating impact on its export trade and its previously strong trading partner,Japan, has sourced significantly higher quantities from Australia instead. The expected reopening of the Japanese market to US beef in early 2006 will most likely see a re-skewing of demand back to US, although this may take some time.
