Last year saw a record level of beef production on a global level, which also meant generally weaker prices. The continued drought in Australia and across large swathes of North America, along with the continued recovery in Europe and South America from Foot and Mouth Disease, led to an increase in cattle slaughter in all these areas. There was also an upsurge in beef production Japan, where production had been severely affected the year before by fears over BSE.
