FAO increases global cereal production forecast

The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has revised upwards its projection for global cereal production in 2016-17 to 2.6bn t, a rise of 7.8mn t on its previous forecast. The FAO attributes the revision to improved prospects for Australian wheat, maize in Ukraine and rice in India. The FAO’s March projection equates to a 66.2mn t — or 2.6pc — increase on total cereal production for 2015-16, which the FAO estimates to have been 2.53bn t.
