Maria Victoria Felice presents her award winning final year project - a modular and ergonomic surgical instrument handle, suitable for all surgeons. Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is a type of surgery during which surgical instruments are inserted into the patient's body through very small incisions. An endoscope is also inserted, so that the surgeon can see what she/he is doing. MIS offers many advantages to patients, such as reduced scarring and a smaller risk of infection. However, it is understandably more difficult for the surgeon. Ongoing research is being conducted to improve the surgical instruments from an ergonomic point of view, including research at the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Malta, where this project was conducted.
