A feasibility study on the use of a novel modular steel gate as a replacement for oak in the design of lock gates. Currently the majority of lock gates on Britain's canals are constructed from wood; either oak or tropical hardwood. However, approximately 15% are fabricated in steel, usually with timber head and heel posts. These are generally referred to as 'composite' gates.
