Size Matters

Product design engineer: small-medium or large sized company? There are significant differences between working for a small-medium and large sized company. This article aims to explore these differences from the perspective of a product design engineer and seeks to identify the long-term career effects. Areas that will be discussed include: product design processes; access to resources; level of design responsibility; personal development opportunities; and potential career progression. The intention of this narrative is to inform product design engineers of some of the positive and negative characteristics related to company size and assist in decision making when applying for a new position. This article may be particularly useful for a university graduate who is about to enter the job market for the first time. The content of this article is based on the author's experience of working for small-medium and large sized organisations in a design capacity.
