Engineering Design Clarified?

If feel compelled to write and voice my own opinion regarding some of the articles in the March/April issue of Engineering Designer. To put my views into perspective, I should first explain how I came to be a design engineer. I started my career at the nuts and bolts end of engineering as capstan setter operator, but in the recession conditions of the late 1970s/80s, I witnessed much of the decline in engineering and consequently experienced many different fields of employment, from farm work to narrow boat mechanic, before returning to education as a mature student. I graduated in 1995 with a BSc in Industrial Product Design from Coventry University. I have been working as a design engineer ever since.
