Conjugated hydrocarbons with extended polycyclic frameworks have fascinated chemists for more than a century. Originally studied because of interest in the fundamental, intrinsic properties associated with such structures, more recent investigations have focused on utilization of these π-electron-rich compounds as materials in optical and electronic device applications.
