'WASTES OF CONCERN'

Government initiatives to reduce the amount of waste going to landfills in Australia have meant an increasing requirement 4for manufacturers to find ways to recover and reuse end-of-life products. John Halkett reports on how thetimber industry is coping. Two of the cleanup directives - Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and Product Stewardship - have identified a number of "wastes of concern". The NSW Government's EPR priority statement lists treated timber as a "waste of concern", while the Victorian Government's Product Stewardship policy- Towards Zero Waste Strategy - identifies treated timber as a "priority product". The Queensland and South Australian Governments are targeting waste timber in various waste reduction strategies.
