While initial studies have demonstrated the feasibility ofapplying two-dimensional finite element models to reach scale riverflood flows, the further development and practical use of such codesfor engineer- ing problems has been hampered by a lack of availablevalidation data. This paper attempts to address this research need byconducting benchmark model validation studies over a range of reachscales, flow regimes and flood events. Spe- cifically, four riverreaches in the UK (the Culm, Stour, Severn and Blackwater) and one inthe USA (the Missouri) have been modelled using the TELEMACtwo-dimen- sional finite element scheme.
