Clays are the most widespread type of sediments in the upper part of the crust. They are also characterized by the most complicated processes of transformation (hydrogeochemical, physicochemical, and biochemical alterations), syneresis, and dehydration, as well as changes in the composition, structure, state, and properties in the course of syngenesis, diagenesis, catagenesis, and hypergenesis. For this reason the attention of many specialists has been focused on study of these issues since the end of the 19th century.
