Attention is focused on the automatic detection of lateralconnections in closed- circuit television images obtained during thesurvey pass of an Insituform renova- tion process with regard tonon-man-entry sewers. It is suggested that computer vision, in theform of edge detection and application-specific selection criteria,pro- vides a practical and economically viable method of lateraldetection. The illumina- tion conditions under which these techni-ques are applied are, however, crucial; it is demonstrated thatdetection is greatly eased by the use of reflected, rather thandirect illumination of the region under consideration.
