After recently returning from a volunteer mission at the Cervic-Cusco clinic in Peru, I read with interest Dr Rosemary Tambour -et's article, "Screening for Cervical Cancer in Low-Resource Settings in 2011." Her diligent research and thoughtful insights highlight the value and challenges of utilizing cervical cytology in low-resource countries. As a cytotechnologist with 20 years of experience, I find it daunting to search for volunteer programs where my skills can be of service, and yet find so very few opportunities available. Dr Tam-bouret's article helped elucidate why so few opportunities exist, but also offered evidence to suggest that we need to do much more to facilitate and advocate for the use of cervical cytology in areas where women are in greatest need.
