This special issue of TUST, focusing on research into trenchless technologies, was conceived during the sequence of International Trenchless Technology Research Colloquia (ITTRC). The first ITTRC was held in the US, hosted by the Trenchless Technology Center, and featured international researchers from many countries as well as representatives from the key stakeholders responsible for specifying and deploying trenchless technologies. The colloquia are open, free-thinking affairs where researchers are able to present their current research, and stakeholders their needs and visions, and where all can share ideas and develop collaborations so that research programs are shaped to be complementary and mutually supportive.
