If the job calls for trenching in confined areas where tender landscaping is at risk, think small. There's a trencher just waiting for the job, be it a walk-behind unit or a riding one. Although relatively diminutive in size, the big news is thatthese machines stand up to all types of working conditions. Even the smallest units in the 10- to 15-horsepower range have been given sturdy frames, ground and chain drives, and other features that make them job-tough.Moreover, many of these trenchers will be sold into the rental market. Estimates put the number of trenchers under 100 hp that enter the rental market at around 30 percent. That percentage grows to about 60 percent when speaking of walk-behind units. So,in addition to incorporating heavy-duty features, manufacturers make the trenchers easy to operate and maintain, knowing that many of the users will not be that familiar with the trencher's operation. Easy-to-understand controls, including color-codedlevers, are considered mandatory, while components are built to require minimal attention. Plus, they're easy to transport, and most will be constantly moving from job to job.
