The most recent meeting of the Australian Society of Endodontology SA branch was held at Melt Restaurant in the trendy Waymouth Street strip on 16 May 2013. We had the honour of Dr John McNamara, an eminent endo-dontist from Brisbane, speak on 'Risk management - the key to successful endodontic practice'. It was an insightful presentation and a timely reminder of the risks of endodontic practice and the manner with which to manage the patient should a problem arise during the course of treatment. Dr McNamara covered the various risks that can arise during the course of endodontic treatment. Given his role in the Advisory Panel for Dental Protection Limited, he also explained that a significant proportion of claims are the result of endodontic treatment that had gone wrong. One of the most critical aspects of managing a patient is communication. This includes the pre-operative explanation of the procedure and potential risks, as well as the use of 'non-emotive' language to explain an unfavourable outcome, such as a perforation or a broken instrument, to a patient. Of course, prevention of such unfavourable outcomes is ideal, and this is where case selection and the ability to recognise one's own clinical ability are crucial.
