The highlight event on the Australian Society of Endodontology South Australia branch calendar was held on 23 August 2013 at the South Australian State Library. There was a large turn out and the 110 strong audience consisted of members, dental students and friends who had come from interstate. The scientific program entitled 'Multidisciplinary approach to endodontic treatment planning' was presented by both interstate and local speakers. The first lecture was presented by Associate Professor Axel Spahr, who is the head of Periodontics at the University of Sydney. He spoke on endo-perio lesions and presented the current literature in a most interesting manner. Given the current climate where implants are often favoured, it was refreshing to hear Associate Professor Spahr highlight the importance of saving teeth where possible, even ones that seem to be diagnosed as having a poor or 'hopeless' prognosis. He also presented data showing that implants were not infallible and some studies have shown that there can be a complication rate of over 30%. He ended his lecture by reminding the audience that implants are a treatment modality to replace missing teeth, not to replace teeth.
