US farm equipment manufacturer John Deere (Moline, Illinois) has acquired Indianapolis, Indiana-based US precision spraying equipment manufacturer Smart Apply. The entities have worked together since 2020, with John Deere rating the acquisition as a “natural progression” of their alliance. Smart Apply's precision spraying solution, Intelligent Spray Control System, can be used as an upgrade kit to improve the performance of “virtually any” air-blast sprayer used in orchards, vineyards and tree nursery spraying applications. The solution leverages technologies such as light detection and ranging (LiDAR) to detect the presence of “individual trees and vines”, and “automatically adjusts” spray volume based on foliage density.
