Challenging deadlines

The International Life-Saving Appliance Manufacturers' Association has highlighted concerns about deadlines for new IMO rules on the evaluation and replacement of lifeboat release and retrieval systems (LRRSs). The IMO has amended the Lifesaving Appliance (LSA) Code to enhance the safety of on-load systems, as stipulated in MSC.1/ Circ.1392 on the rehooking of lifeboats. To provide hook stability, the release mechanism must be designed so that, when fully closed, the weight of the lifeboat does not transmit any force to the operating mechanism. Locking devices must be designed so they cannot turn to 'open' due to hook load forces. If a hydrostatic interlock is provided, it must automatically reset upon lifting the boat from the water.
